When trying to please people with your wedding toast, forgetting to thank someone is one thing. On the other hand saying the wrong thing altogether in the father of the bride wedding toasts could be a complete disaster! I really wanted to avoid doing this, so I researched a number of helpful tips to avoid this embarrassing situation.
Pleasing The Newlyweds
The worst thing you can do is start talking about embarrassing stories about your daughter’s ex-boyfriends. It might seem obvious, but believe me there are fathers that do it! Even if you want to compare your new son-in-law favourably, if she’s anything like mine she will not appreciate it – especially on the most important day of her life!
You should make sure to speak favourably of the bride at all times. Though it may seem fitting to add a slightly teasing joke, trust me, this is not the right situation for it. In my speech I stuck to what I knew my daughter would want me to say, and it worked!
Alcohol
However well you may have prepared your speech (probably better than I did!) your number one worst enemy is alcohol. Alcohol can bring just about anyone down, making them say the wrong things at the wrong times. I was really wary of this and decided to hold off on drinking until my speech was over. It’s a good thing I did, the groom’s father did not take the same advice.
A Few Other Tips
What made the idea of the father of the bride speeches stressful to me was the fact I didn’t plan ahead for my first daughter’s wedding. Not planning ahead means being in a lot less control of what you say and thats a mistake I only made once. Luckily there are plenty of resources online for those who even want a funny wedding speech that doesn’t offend anyone.
Lastly I have to add, no matter how well you say things, going on for too long isn’t going to go down well. People’s attention spans tend to be a bit short, and no one wants your long speech to separate their empty stomachs and the food waiting for them at the banquet. Try to work on your father of the bride speech so it doesn’t take an hour to deliver!
